Race, Fitness-to-Practice and the Experience of Trainee Educators

A study in response to findings the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students enrolled on education courses at a Northern University, are over-represented Fitness-to-Practice (FTP) investigations. Referrals FTP intended rectify underperformance of students. As phenomenon, it replicates trends across workplace, explained by capital, racial discomfort structural inequality. In this study, experiences BAME placement, settings, applied provide insights into disparity referrals. To capture data relating this, phenomenological approach was taken, using semi-structured interviews subjective first-person accounts from target sample. These were evaluated thematic analysis, with finding considered Critical Race Theory (CRT) as lens.The demonstrated two opposing that united their conception identity. The research found students’ placement may be an intersectional coherence race status role they occupy within placement. A clear link between could not established, but CRT perspective points issues racism, white neutrality supremacy active settings.
